It could be argued that Chemistry is the foundation of modern science. Mathematics has made Physics possible which principles are the foundation of the science. At it’s core, Chemistry is the study of some of the smallest particles of matter: atoms. Understanding how atoms behave gives us unprecedented power!  What we are able to do with an understanding of chemistry is truly awesome, some might say miraculous!

Center and Right: The Lewis and ball and stick models for Morphine are shown.

Atoms combine to form molecules, and how those molecules combine to form larger macromolecules such as proteins, lipids, carbohydrates, nucleic acids, etc… is especially important for anyone pursuing a career in medicine. It also should go without saying that anyone who wishes to sift through this day of information overload and the sea of misinformation, will benefit greatly. How many fad diets tout some molecular or chemical basis for their principles? Or how many hot topics like global warming are debated without empirical discussions surrounding the chemical interactions at play? Around every corner is a natural homeopath condemning synthetic pharmaceuticals, ignoring the fact that many of today’s medicines are simply copies of compounds already found in nature! Since much of our every day living stems from advances in Chemistry, it behooves anyone wishing to have not only an appreciation for the world, but an intelligent opinion of the same, to study Chemistry. Within this section, I’ll make posts fitting within the field as will use two texts primarily Nivaldo Tro’s Chemistry Structure and Properties and Organic Chemistry by Brown, Iverson, Anslyn, and Foote.
