Cardiology:
The cardiovascular system is composed of the heart, arteries, veins, capillaries, and blood. The heart is the muscular pump responsible for delivering oxygen and nutrients throughout the body. In general, arteries carry blood away from the heart while veins carry blood back to the heart. Capillaries connect arteries to veins.
The base of the heart is the superior portion that is the widest. Deep to it are the right and left atria. Where it tapers to a point inferiorly is the apex of the heart. The heart has four named surfaces. The anterior surface, just beneath the sternum, is the sternocostal surface of the heart. Underneasth, the most inferior surface is named the diaphragmatic surface of the heart. The right and left surfaces are named differently. The left surface protruding into a notch in the left lung is named the pulmonary surface of the heart, whereas the right surface is the right border of the heart. Between ventricles are the anterior interventricular groove, and posterior interventricular groove inferiorly. Circumventing the outside between the atria and the ventricles is a subtle fat and vessel filled depression known as the coronary groove.
